Galleria Civica di Modena

Galleria Civica di Modena

Established in 1959 as a public institution run by the municipality of Modena, it became one of the leading culture production centres on the Italian contemporary art scene owing to its constant attention to artistic experimentation and language contamination, blending painting, drawing, photography, video, architecture, design and comics.

The gallery hosts two important permanent collections: the Drawing Collection consisting of over 4,000 works on paper by Italian twentieth-century artists, and the Photography Collection, a fonds of contemporary photography begun in 1991 following a donation from Modenese photographer Franco Fontana. Over the years it has organized exhibitions, shows and events involving Italy’s top artists and numerous leading lights from the international art scene, including Jaume Plensa, Ricardo Brey, Allen Jones, Yayoi Kusama, Ugo Rondinone, Katharina Grosse, Mark Dion, Nam June Paik, Josef Albers and Daniel Spoerri.
