Yuval Avital. About Birds is a large project involving visual arts, technologies and music by the Israeli artist and composer born in Jerusalem in 1977.
Curated by Elisa Camesasca, the exhibition comes about in close correlation with the very first performance of the work of visual and sound art of the same name, devised by Avital during the first lockdown and scheduled to take place in the Pavarotti-Freni municipal theatre, directed by Aldo Sisillo, on 24 March. In order to reprocess and connect back to the experience that we all lived in 2020, in June 2022 Avital entered a voluntary week-long lockdown with three Israeli musicians from the Meitar Ensemble in an old villa in the Modenese hills where, under the artist’s guidance, the participants slowly metamorphosized into birds.
The exhibition will demonstrate this process through photographs, images and video projections taken from the performance and from Birdscores, a generative application programmed by the artist especially for the project. It will tell the story of the various phases in the characters’ transformation by immersing the public in an unusual, profound and dreamlike journey into the artist’s universe.
About Birds by Yuval Avital, put on by the Pavarotti-Freni municipal theatre in Modena in collaboration with FMAV Fondazione Modena Arti Visive and Ensemble Meitar from Tel Aviv, is an evolution of OperaStreaming and part of the big project scheme to achievethe international goals of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network involving other cities in the Media Arts Cluster.
